The Old Man and The Man

Every time you earn your pay check all you get is the bare bones. Because it is picked off by the government to serve their needs. You lose almost everything you’ve worked for to the man. Santiago is the same. He worked for days to earn his pay check (which is represented by the fish). Then as he was bringing it home the man decided to take his taxes away from it. (This is represented by the sharks in the story.) This book is a metaphor for what is happening every day.

If you think back to the story, the old man goes out on a small boat by himself to try to catch a fish. Some will say that this was a mistake but I disagree. He is a wise old man and knows what he is doing. After a while he hooks a giant marlin. He reels it in for a few days, he then killed the fish and tied him to the side of his skiff. This is when the man comes.” Galanos,” he said aloud. He had seen the second fin now coming up behind the first.” (107) Here they are the leaders of the ocean the sharks. They are the head honchos they are the man. They are out to steal your hard earned pay. The man sees what you have worked for and takes what he feels he deserves. Santiago is to proud to admit he is unhappy.
Throughout the entire book Santiago is fighting the man. “he was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.”(9). this is the very first line in the book. The man is trying to bring Santiago down. He’s denying him of his lively hood. The old man is not working any less than the other fishermen but he is receiving less pay. This, of course is not fair but that’s how the man operates.
“In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao.” (9) Another way the man tries to bring Santiago down is by taking away the boy. The boy, whose name is Manolin was Santiago's best friend in the story. They had many great times together. But because of the situation they are separated. Santiago's personality is being tested. He is upset and tired. His buttons are being pushed and he is trying not to let the man get to him.
“They must have taken a quarter of him and of the best meat.”(110) This is the largest concept of the story. The man always takes away the best part of what you have received. This quote is referring to when the sharks have eaten a part of his fish. It’s just like when the man takes away you money. He takes away most of what you need. Santiago struggled to bring in the fish and then the best parts were stolen away.
The main point that I am trying to get through in this essay is that the man brings us all down. The man is a supernatural being who shows himself in many different figures. He is the government and any one who you can think of who tries to bring you down. In this story the man is showing himself in the sharks. Santiago is an average guy who is just trying to get by. He goes out and earns his pay, which is the fish. Then as you know the man came and took what he felt he deserved. That is what happens top an easy going guy just tries to get by but is shut down by the man.

  1. 1. The thesis is "Every time you earn your pay check all you get is the bare bones." This is a good way to draw the reader in as it gets you to think. It makes me want to keep reading.

    2. The best quotation used in the essay was “he was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” because it was most relevant to the story.

    3. The writing style was the best part of this essay. It used a great load of metaphors and vivid details and adjectives.

    4. The only thing that I would suggest to improve your story would be to proofread it. There were some issues on punctuation and sentence structure but other than that it's fine.

  2. The thesis is that things are taken away from people throughout life and you cant do anything about it. It is explained well.
“he was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.”(9).It gave you a sense of the mood of the book.
"The main point that I am trying to get through in this essay is that the man brings us all down. The man is a supernatural being who shows himself in many different figures." It wraps up the essays whole point.
It seems very repetitive. Try to let us know what is going on then make it flow more

  3. I. the essays thesis is that he thinks Santiago going out to sea is not a mistake. it is not very clear thought because it doesnt really ever say what the point of the essay is. it somewhat engages me because it talks about a man earning his money and then getting it taken away through taxes which i thought was very clever.
II. i think that “They must have taken a quarter of him and of the best meat.” is the strongest quote because then it is related to real life. it is related to real world situation by saying that the man always takes what people need most meaning money. That is why i thought this quote was the strongest in the essay.
III. I think that this essay is strong in comparing it to the real world and making it interesting to read. An example of this is comparing it to the taxes and men making their income but it getting taken away from the Man. "Then as you know the man came and took what he felt he deserved." is an example of this.
IV. i think the weakest part of this essay is that at the end the author says "You may not agree but that’s how I feel about the subject." that makes it seem not as strong and not proving the point as strongly. That is what i think is the weakest part about this essay, other than that it was very good.

  4. The thesis is when he states that Santiago is going through what everyday people go through. It really isn't that clear and could use some work. I think that the thesis really isn't that focused and could be more connected to the topic.

I think that the first quote is the best. It fits in with the paragraph in which it is taking part in.

I think the author has a good beginning. It is well written and connects you to the reading. "Every time you earn your pay check all you get is the bare bones. Because it is picked off by the government to serve their needs."

The author should think about making a stronger connection to the theme or prompt.

  5. 1)Every time you earn your pay check all you get is the bare bones. This means that things in life screw you over a lot. it is a clear thesis and well put.

2)“he was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the gulf stream and had gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish.” this quote just screames you screwed me over. this quote stood out because it desrcibes the whole book.

3)This essay is filled with authority and force, just like the american loggers. This essay will disagree with you no matter what. this essay has some weak points though.

4)the weakest part of the essay is its meat. this essay has plenty of bones, and ligiments, not so much meat, but this essay sure is a boner. this essay doesn't have a LOT OF SUPPORTING DETAILS!!! all in all an 8/10.

  6. 1. The thesis of this story is the world is ruled by the man. The man takes what you work hard for away and calls you a fat washed up loser and crush your soul. Life is a challenge.
2.“In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao.” This is the strongest quote because it shows how the man ruined the ozone, he's burning down the amazon, and he kiddnapped shamu and put her in a chlorine tank! This quote truly shows how the man brings Santiago down.
    3. This essay rules. It shows how the man takes away Santiago's hard earned "pay". The man ruined Santiago's to try and make anything cool, pure, or awesome.
    4. I would get very angry if the man even thinks about taking the A away from this essay. This essay makes me want to overthrow the man. I is perfectly written with good examples.

  7. I. This essay's thesis is that the book is a metaphor for what is happening everyday. I t is focused and concise, however, it isn't clear to me what essay this is about.

II. The third quote is the strongest because it is very clearly explained. Also, it is the best integrated.

III. This essay's strong point would have to be the writing style. Everything is very clearly written and explained. Also, the thing that is explained is very thoughtful, and that really furthers the essay.

IV. The first two quotes aren't grammatically correct. There are either punctuation mistakes, or it isn't smoothly integrated into the paragraph.

  8. 1 the essay is trying to convince you that the man is bringing you down. this is shown by how the government takes all you money. it was pretty clear

2the third quote is well intergtrated. i thought it was the best.

3 the essay was well written. i was easy to read. i found that the voice really came through

4 the reasons are not good. it sounds like a parinoid hippe on weed. the man is trying to bring us down, man. i dont think that that has been said science 1979

I think that the thesis really isn't that focused and could be more connected to the topic. I think the first quote is the best. It fits in with the paragraph nicely and goes with the flow. I think Alec has a good beginning. It is well written and connects you to the reading. "Every time you earn your pay check all you get is the bare bones. Because it is picked off by the government to serve their needs." Alec should try to make a better connection to the theme and the overall topic of the story.

  10. 1. I really don't understand what the thesis is. I know he is saying that he is going through what everyone goes through and the man is ruining his life, but i don't really understand.
2.I think that the first quote is the best. It really goes along with what the paragraph is talking about.
    3. SOmething that is good is that it is well organized. it is very neat and is not confusing to read at all.
4.something to work on is the thesis. it is confusing to understand. i would make it a little more understandable if you want a good grade on this project.
